A suspect escaped released by a police officer at nearby Benton Street and Kiely Boulevard, Santa Clara High School is locked down this afternoon.

Santa Clara police spokesman Lt. Phil Cooke said officers are searching for the suspect north of the campus. He said the school was locked down "just as an abundance of caution."

"We did not want 1,000 students running around while we search for the guy," Cooke said.

The parent of a Santa Clara student said her daughter texted her at 2:10 p.m. saying the school had been locked down. At 2:22 p.m., the daughter said someone had escaped police somewhere near the school.

Cooke did not release any other details.

The situation is serious now.
